Diamond Gang Successfully Heists Dutch Schultz’s Booze Convoy!
The Dutch Schultz gang was heading south from the Canadian border with roadster and truck load of booze, real booze, not the cheap stuff!. The trip so far was going smoothly, rolling steadily through the Catskills in Greene County New York, heading towards a rendezvous with more of the gang at Gipson’s Roadhouse. But the gang that “owned” this turf was the Legs Diamond gang, and they got wind of this booze run thru their home turf! They had it all, the route, the timing and two perfect places to ambush their rivals.
The Diamond gang set up two ambush sites and waited for Christmas! The first ambush caused losses amongst the Schultz’s and caused them to fire a flare into the night sky. The flare was to tell their waiting gang members to come help. Unfortunately, it also warned the other waiting ambushers and the cops!
It just so happened that patrolling this neck of the woods was a squad car from two different county police departments, Greene and Ulster. They were both on their way to enjoy some “refreshment” at Gipson’s, and of course, to patrol for illegal booze shipments! Both PD squads rolled dice to see which way their allegiances went, and both came out as lawful!
The other Schultz group and their car sped out of Gipson’s and away down the road towards their compatriots to offer assistance. With ill-luck, both squad cars coming from opposite directions, saw the gang car speed down the road. The Greene Co. squad car got to the turn first and gave chase, with Ulster Co. coming after.
At the second ambush site, the group there decided to drop their tree into the road as well. But, again said tree only partially blocked the road.. The Schultz car #2 had to break hard to a stop due to the partially blocked road and was shot at by Diamond crew #2. With this exchange of fire going on, the Greene Co. cops pulled up and added their own weight of fire on the Schultz car #2.
Whilst all this was going on at site #2, site #1 was a blood bath for the Schultz gang #1, with the Diamond boys backing the newly commandeered booze truck back onto the road and heading back north to find another road trouble free route home. The Ulster Co. cops never got into the fight, caution was the watch word!
